One of the most widely recognized measures of the strength of an academic research institution is the amount of federal grant money it is awarded and how it ranks nationally. Each year, the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research publishes a nationwide list of department rankings, which are watched across the country as a key indicator of each institution’s competitive value and success. Within the last year, from amongst all academic pathology departments in the United States, the ranking for the University of Florida Department of Pathology, Immunology and Laboratory Medicine skyrocketed from #43 to #23—a remarkable and unprecedented ranking shift.
