Teaching Philosophy
To prospective students looking to join the laboratory: We teach a scientific framework in which students are encouraged to expand and not restrict their way of thinking. We promote the challenging of existing dogmas and scrutinizing of indirectly derived assumptions about biological phenomena. Students will be helped to study newly evolving scientific trends and to also keep current on relevant published scientific information. We believe in a scientific practice that is both independent and highly cooperative. Our experience has provided us with the benchmarks necessary to ensure effective training in the: formulation of testable hypotheses, technical proficiency, critically analysis of results and communication of scientific findings. Please contact us to learn more about currently available research opportunities.
Research Profile
The laboratory focuses on the study of how brain pathologies affect the neurovascular unit (NVU). Given that the blood brain barrier (BBB) is the gateway to the CNS, we approach our studies by centralizing our efforts around this highly specialized structure. The ongoing research can be categorized as follows: 1) assay development to usher-in the next generation of microfluidic modeling of the neurovascular unit, 2) characterization of the temporal and spatial progression of neuroinflammation, 3) serological biomarker discovery for evaluation of BBB damage during brain injury, and 4) intervention with pharmacological or biological agents that can halt damage or enhance repair of NVUs. Our expertise is interdisciplinary and meets at the intersection of neuroscience, immunology, molecular biology, microbiology, translational medicine, pharmacology and bioengineering.
