William E Winter, M.D.

A native of San Francisco, California, Dr. William E. Winter attended Santa Clara University as an undergraduate majoring in chemistry. He attained his medical degree at Loyola University of Chicago in Maywood, Illinois. Thereafter, Dr. Winter trained in pediatrics at the University of Kentucky followed by training in pediatric endocrinology at the University of Florida under Dr. Arlan Rosenbloom and Dr. Noel Maclaren. Dr. Winter held medical boards in pediatrics, pediatric endocrinology and chemical pathology. He also was boarded by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC). Dr. Winter is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (FCAP) and is a fellow of the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (FADLM). Dr. Winter was professor of Pathology, Immunology & Laboratory Medicine, Pediatrics, and Molecular Genetics & Microbiology at the University of Florida until his retirement in 2023 when he was appointed as an Emeritus Professor. Between 1993 and 2006 he served as Medical Director for clinical chemistry at UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Winter directed the pathology residency training program for a total of 10 years through 2004. In addition to his duties as a clinical chemist, he directed the 2nd year medical student pathology course between 2004 and 2012. Following the medical student curriculum revision of 2012, Dr. Winter founded the following courses: the respiratory system, the cardiovascular system, kidney and the urinary tract, gastroenterology and hepatology, dermatology and the musculoskeletal system. and hematology. He taught in the Foundations of Medicine course, Fundamentals of Microbiology and Immunology, Introduction to Cancer Biology and Clinical Oncology, the Pain and Addition intensive, and Endocrinology and Reproduction. Between 2004 and 2020, Dr. Winter served as the course director for Dental Pathology in the College of Dentistry. Dr. Winter’s final clinical assignments were as the medical director for point-of-care testing and as medical director for phlebotomy (Clinical Laboratory Support Services). Dr. Winter was an NIH-funded independent investigator from 2000 until his retirement. His final NIH funding was as Principle Investigator for the Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Islet Cell Autoantibody Core Laboratory (https://www.trialnet.org/), The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) Core Laboratory (that included the Islet Autoantibody Standardization Program (https://teddy.epi.usf.edu/), and the Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network (RADIANT) Central Laboratory (https://www.atypicaldiabetesnetwork.org/).

Dr. Winter holds medical boards in pediatrics (from the American Board of Pediatrics), pediatric endocrinology (from the American Board of Pediatrics) and chemical pathology (from the American Board of Pathology). He also is boarded by the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC). Dr. Winter is a fellow of the College of American Pathologists (FCAP) and a fellow of the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (FADLM). Dr. Winter was a staff clinical chemist for UFH Shands Hospital. His responsibilities included serum, urine and hemoglobin electrophoresis as well as immunofixation electrophoresis and immunotyping. At the time of his retirement, Dr. Winter was the medical director for the Clinical Laboratory Support Services (CLSC, phlebotomy) and Point of Care Testing (POCT).

As an NIH-funded independent investigator since 2000, at the time of his retirement, he was Principle Investigator for the Type 1 Diabetes TrialNet Islet Cell Autoantibody Core Laboratory, The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) Core Laboratory (including the Islet Autoantibody Standardization Program), and the Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network (RADIANT) Central Laboratory.
